Illinois’ steady left-handed bullpen weapon with MLB Draft buzz
In the 2025 season, Bates emerged as a high-leverage reliever for Illinois, leading the team with eight saves, posting a 2.83 ERA, striking out 34 in 28.2 innings, and holding opponents to a .153 average. He earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors and was named to the preseason Stopper of the Year watch list entering 2026, which tells you evaluators saw real late-inning value. He missed the 2026 season with injury, but his performance profile suggests a tough, strike-throwing southpaw who fits best for teams needing poise, leverage, and a proven finisher.
