Fred Payton gives Mercer a steady, efficient quarterback with a proven big-play ceiling
In the 2022 season, Fred Payton was a polished, high-upside FCS QB for Mercer, finishing with 216 completions on 325 attempts and 1,421 passing yards in a year that also included a school-record five-touchdown game; ESPN lists his career totals at 7,083 passing yards and 65 TDs against 29 INTs. He stands out for quick, on-time delivery, strong ball placement, and good decision-making—traits scouts have praised as “very smart” and “not putting the ball in harm’s way.” The fit is strong if a team wants a poised rhythm passer who can operate efficiently and attack downfield without living recklessly.
