Northwestern’s relentless walk-on grinder who made himself useful everywhere
In the 2009 season, Mark Woodsum was not a volume runner, but he was the kind of glue-guy coaches love: a 6-foot, 230-pound superback/runner who handled short-yardage work, helped on special teams, and brought strong effort and enthusiasm to Northwestern. His career line was modest, but the differentiator was versatility and toughness rather than highlight-reel production. If a team wants a physical, high-motor role player who can do dirty work, Woodsum fits; if it needs explosive backfield juice, he’s not that guy.
