high-upside, strikeout-heavy right-hander with proven dominance in high school
McElyea is a 6-foot-6 right-handed pitcher whose calling card is overpowering command and bat-missing stuff: as a senior at Draughn, he went 9-0 with a 1.11 ERA, 105 strikeouts, and just three walks in 63 innings, and he ran a 43⅓-inning scoreless streak that drew record-level attention. He’s shown he can carry a staff and handle big-game pressure, including multiple complete-game shutouts and a no-hitter in the state playoffs, making him an appealing fit for a team that values length, competitiveness, and upside over immediate polished college production.[1][3][4]
