Northwestern’s big righty who can eat innings — but the strike zone has been a work in progress
In the 2026 season, Matt Kouser emerged as Northwestern’s workhorse RHP, making 15 appearances and 12 starts while posting a 2.77 ERA at one point before finishing with a 5.02 mark and showing real swing-and-miss flashes alongside persistent command issues. At 6-foot-6, he brings size, durability and starter’s stamina, and he proved he can compete in big-league-sized outings by logging multiple quality starts, including a strong 6.0-inning effort against Indiana. The pitch mix and frame are intriguing; the fit question is whether a staff can tighten the walk rate and unlock his upside.
