Jake Rifenburg is emerging as Northwestern’s most reliable freshman lefty
In the 2026 season, Jake Rifenburg quickly became a key arm for Northwestern, leading the Wildcats’ qualified pitching staff with a 4.75 ERA in 30.1 innings and earning starts in high-leverage spots. He flashed upside with a career-high six strikeouts against Purdue and also picked up his first career save with three innings of one-run relief against Indiana. What makes him interesting is the fastball jump from the high-70s to 87–89 mph with carry, which suggests real developmental room; he looks like a young strike-throwing left-hander with enough competitive edge to matter.
