Redshirt freshman safety with a quarterback’s competitive edge
Tavion Byrd enters the 2026 season as a redshirt freshman safety for Stony Brook, bringing a 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame and a background as a high-school captain who won multiple player-of-the-week honors and even delivered a game-winning Hail Mary in 2025 prep ball. He redshirted in 2025, so the big question is upside, not track record—but his athletic versatility, leadership, and proven playmaking instincts make him an intriguing developmental fit for a secondary that values physicality and confidence.
