Winthrop’s Freshman RHP with Big-Strikeout Pedigree and Freshman-of-the-Week Clout
Garrett Byrd, a right-handed pitcher for the Winthrop Eagles, is a high-intensity freshman who already earned Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honors (March 9, 2026) after securing his first collegiate win against Marshall on Feb. 23, 2026[2][3]. Before college, he was North Lenoir High’s rising star with a 2.91 ERA, 65 strikeouts in 43 innings, and a .345 batting average as a versatile three-position athlete[8]. His differentiators include elite strikeout ability, a biology-focused academic drive, and a pre-game ritual of eating purple Skittles that signals his quirky, confident personality[1][8]. While no 2026 season stats are yet published, his freshman-week award and high-school strikeout rate suggest he’s a high-upside arm for teams seeking intensity and development potential[1][2].
