Gabe Gonzalez brings size, upside, and early promise behind the plate for Mercer
In the 2026 season, Mercer catcher Gabe Gonzalez showed flashes of a high-upside right-handed bat, hitting .294 with a .912 OPS across 22 games, while also earning early trust from the coaching staff as a projectable, leadership-driven backstop. At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, he was praised as a strong fit who can “walk in and play immediately,” with Mercer noting his great leadership skills and comparing his approach behind the dish to former Bear Collin Price. He looks like the kind of catcher who can stabilize a staff and grow into more offense.
