Montrell Rice brings freshman power to Sacramento State’s backfield
Rice is a true freshman RB at Sacramento State with a big-bodied frame at 6-foot-0, 230 pounds and a strong high-school résumé: he rushed for 1,740 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior at Tennyson HS, including a 306-yard, three-touchdown game. He enters a crowded Hornets backfield, so his value is as a downhill, physical runner who can add toughness and short-yardage pop rather than instant feature-back volume. The main caveat: he was listed out for the Fresno State game on September 12, 2026 with an undisclosed injury, so availability matters. As a fit, he looks like a bruising complement who can grow into a real asset if he stays healthy.
