Strikeout-heavy Torero veteran with draft buzz and swing-and-miss stuff
In the 2026 season, Diego Gutierrez was San Diego’s workhorse right-hander, leading the Toreros in strikeouts (84) and innings (66.2) while earning All-WCC Honorable Mention and getting drafted by the Orioles in the 17th round[1][2]. The big selling points are the bat-missing slider, ability to work deep enough to log quality starts, and proven durability from a five-season college track that included 73 strikeouts in 73.1 innings in 2025 at CSUN[1]. The caution flag: his ERA climbed to 6.61 in 2026, so he looks like a competitive, high-upside arm who can miss bats, but one who still needed sharper run prevention to be an easy plug-and-play fit[2][3].
