Valley rim protector who became a program-defining force
In his Valparaiso years, Fernandez stood out as a 6-10 defensive anchor who set the school’s single-season blocks record and finished as the program’s all-time blocks leader, a clear sign of real rim-protecting value. In the 2015 season, he was widely described as a key force behind Valpo’s elite defense, bringing length, timing, and a physical paint presence that changed game plans. He also earned recognition as Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year, but his free-throw touch was a known weakness. If you need toughness, shot-blocking, and a low-maintenance interior defender, he was a fit; if you need polished scoring, less so.
