Sam Houchens is Rhode Island’s do-it-all freshman arm with late-inning poise
In the 2026 season, Sam Houchens emerged as a valuable freshman left-hander for Rhode Island, posting a 4.29 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 35.2 innings while also earning multiple saves and a win in high-leverage spots. He’s shown swing-and-miss stuff and real versatility, working as both a pitcher and outfield option, but the eye-catcher is his composure: Rhode Island trusted him to finish games against quality opponents, and reports note hitless or scoreless relief outings mixed with one strong four-inning save. If your team wants a competitive, multi-use lefty who can handle pressure, he’s worth a hard look.
