Ryan Johnson’s 2026 Illinois debut: live arm, but still searching for command
Ryan Johnson is a 6-foot-4 sophomore right-hander for Illinois who brings a projectable frame and a power pitcher look, but his 2026 start was rough: he appeared in four games, made one start, logged 3.0 innings, struck out two, and posted a 27.00 ERA for the Illini. His appeal is the upside—size, right-right profile, and enough arm talent to earn innings—but right now he looks more like a development piece than a finished weekend weapon. If your team values ceiling and patience, he’s intriguing; if you need immediate stability, the early returns say “not yet.”
