Brian Whitsey brings Illinois toughness and ball-hawking instincts to NIU’s linebacker room
Whitsey is a Chicago product whose high-school tape and recruiting profile point to a physical, versatile linebacker with real coverage instincts: in 2019, he logged 32 tackles, 7 pass deflections, 4 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery, while also playing receiver, which hints at good feel and athletic range. NIU listed him as a redshirt freshman in 2022, and his profile shows no available college game statistics yet, so the main appeal is developmental upside, special-teams value, and a defense-first mindset rather than proven production at the college level.
