Sam Novotny gives SDSU a dependable, strike-throwing starter with big-game innings
In the 2026 season, South Dakota State right-hander Sam Novotny worked as a fixture in the starting rotation, making 14 starts and logging 65.1 innings with 49 strikeouts while earning wins in key spots against Tarleton State, North Dakota State, and in the Summit League title game run. He brings size, durability, and a starter’s poise, plus a track record of handling pressure after transferring from Johnson County CC. The separator: he looks like a college arm who can steady a staff, compete deep into games, and give a team a competitive weekend starter.
