Makayla Villapando brings steady glove work and contact upside to Cal Poly’s catcher mix
In the 2026 season, Cal Poly sophomore catcher Makayla Villapando looks like a low-drama, high-reliability piece: the roster lists her at 5-foot-8 and the Mustangs’ stats page shows she hit .167 with a .625 OPS while going 10-for-1 in games played, but her calling card has been defense and composure. As a West Valley College transfer, she arrived with a strong résumé, including a .991 fielding percentage, just one error in 110 chances, and a 3C2A State Championship All-Tournament Team nod. If your team wants a catcher who can handle the staff, keep the game clean, and add upside as a contact hitter, she’s absolutely worth a look.
