a blue-collar WVU back who earned trust the hard way
In the 2025 season, Clay Ash carved out a real role for West Virginia as a tough, dependable walk-on turned contributor, rushing for 131 yards and adding 59 receiving yards while also working on special teams. He’s not a flashy stat monster, but the appeal is his versatility, competitiveness, and resilience: he kept climbing the depth chart, won WVU’s 2025 Tommy Nickolich Memorial Award, and showed enough effort and reliability to get real coaching trust. He’s a fit for teams that value toughness, special teams value, and low-drama, high-accountability backs.
