Walk-On Hawkeye Turned NFL Safety
Derek Pagel was a **walk-on** at Iowa who developed into a **2nd-team All-Conference** defender in 2002 before being drafted in the 5th round, which signals real toughness, coachability, and steady upward growth rather than just raw hype.[5][2] At 6-1 and 208 pounds, he had the frame for a physical DB, and his path makes him a fit for teams that value dependable, low-drama defensive backs who earn trust through effort and consistency.[1][5]
