Josh Volmerding’s swing-and-miss left arm helped power Cal Poly’s historic 2026 run
Volmerding is a 6-foot-4, 210-pound southpaw whose low-90s fastball and wipeout slider give him real pro upside; in the 2025 season he logged a team-leading 83 strikeouts in 83 2/3 innings, and in 2026 he worked through a lower-body injury, returned in May, and still delivered a six-inning, seven-strikeout quality start in Cal Poly’s regional-clinching win. He’s the kind of arm you care about because he misses bats, competes through adversity, and has shown enough polish and projection to interest the Red Sox, who drafted him in the 8th round.
