Minnesota’s steady defensive-minded guard with coach-trusted grit
Kay Sylva was a reliable, coach-approved guard for Minnesota, earning the 2009 Coaches Award for leadership and work ethic while being described as one of the team’s top defenders. In the 2008-09 season, she averaged 3.8 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 1.0 steals in 13.3 minutes per game, giving the Gophers energy, disruption, and low-maintenance toughness off the bench. She’s the kind of player teams like because she competes, defends, and fits into winning lineups without needing the ball.
