Nate McKinney’s App State legacy is still the gold standard for Mountaineer punters
Nate McKinney built his Appalachian State résumé as a high-end field-position weapon, finishing the 2003 season ranked No. 3 nationally with a 44.5-yard punting average and piling up 18 punts inside the 20 plus 22 punts of 50+ yards. His differentiator was consistency with bite: over a four-year starting run, he averaged 42.4 yards on 265 punts and showed he could flip the field with real hang time and placement. He’s the kind of punter you want if you value hidden yardage, nerves, and big-game reliability.
