Matthijs Brings Power Relief and Big-Game Gravitas to UNC
Matthew Matthijs is a 6-foot-2, 230-pound right-hander who entered 2026 as one of college baseball’s premier returning relievers after earning 2026 preseason second-team All-America recognition and piling up 12 wins in 2024, a rare stat-leader marker for a bullpen arm[14]. In his UNC career, he has mixed swing-and-miss stuff with workload toughness, and his 2026 senior line included 3-0, a 6.39 ERA, 39 strikeouts and 13 walks in 31.0 innings before he was drafted by Seattle[11]. The big differentiator: he’s already been trusted in leverage, has proven he can handle the spotlight, and despite an injury-shortened 2025, he still profiles as a battletested, high-upside fit if you want a competitive, experienced arm[7][14].
