UCLA speed threat Jaella Ann Mercado brings elite baserunning upside in a limited freshman role
Mercado’s 2026 impact has come mostly as a pinch runner, with 44 games played, 16 runs scored, and a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen-base attempts, which makes her a clear value add in late-game pressure spots. She showed extra defensive versatility with one appearance in right field, and her high-school track record suggests real speed and contact potential: a .458 average, 39 runs, and 31 steals as a senior at Bishop O’Dowd in 2025. For teams, the appeal is obvious—she can change a game without the ball ever being put in play for her.[1][3]
