David Johnson isn’t Norfolk State’s QB1 right now — but the battle says plenty
In the 2026 season, David Johnson was in Norfolk State’s quarterback competition, but Deljay Bailey won the starting job before the opener, so Johnson is currently more of a developmental fit than a plug-and-play starter[3]. The interesting part: he stayed in the race deep into camp, which suggests coaches saw enough arm talent, poise, or upside to keep him in the mix. If you want a quarterback with a clear path to snaps, he’s not it yet; if you want a transfer with room to grow and the chance to flip the depth chart, he’s worth a harder look[3].
