Zakye Barker brings proven run-stopping production and veteran downhill toughness to SMU
Barker is a productive, experienced linebacker whose 2024 breakout at East Carolina earned Second Team All-AAC honors after he posted 86 tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles; in 2025 at SMU he added 27 tackles and a forced fumble in 11 games. He stands out for his quick first step, pursuit, and willingness to play through adversity, including returning from an ACL injury that slowed his earlier development. He looks like a strong fit for a defense that values physical, assignment-sound, playmaking second-level defenders.[1][12][13][14]
