Tech’s all-time sack machine, but his story is really about impact over box-score flair
In the 2002 season, Greg Gathers was still one of Georgia Tech’s most feared edge defenders, but a kidney disorder limited his strength, conditioning, and stamina, forcing him to miss games and dulling the burst that made him an All-ACC, second-team All-America pass rusher[12][3]. His calling card was disruptive violence off the edge: Georgia Tech’s career sack leader with 31, plus 57 tackles for loss, including a 13-sack breakout in 2000[3][11]. Why care? Because when healthy, he was a difference-maker who could wreck protections; the caution flag is obvious, though, given the medical history that changed his late-career trajectory[7][12].
