Carter Champey flashed real freshman upside for UMES with a strikeout arm and a big-night ceiling
In the 2025 season, Maryland Eastern Shore right-hander Carter Champey logged 33.1 innings over 15 appearances with 23 strikeouts, and he earned NEC Rookie of the Week after throwing five scoreless relief innings against Central Connecticut State[1][8]. He’s a power-armed, competitive freshman-era starter/reliever type who showed he can miss bats, work multiple innings, and handle a heavy load early in his college career[2][8]. The caution flag: he was still learning command and had some uneven outings, so he looks like more of a development bet than an instant plug-and-play ace[2][11].
