Derrek Blackwell brings versatile, old-school toughness to the tight end spot
Blackwell’s value is versatility: at Western Illinois, he has lined up at tight end and fullback, and his earlier career showed he could contribute as a runner and receiver, not just a blocker[1]. In the 2007 season, he appeared in nine games and totaled 50 rushing yards with a touchdown, building on a career that included 121 rushing yards, 54 receiving yards, and two touchdowns[1]. His background as an Illinois top-30 student-athlete and multi-sport performer suggests discipline and competitiveness, making him a fit for a staff that wants a rugged, adaptable, team-first piece[1].
