Former Wisconsin guard Walt McGrory remembered as a high-IQ scorer and Academic All-Big Ten standout
Walt McGrory was a steady, coachable guard who paired elite production at Edina—where he finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,126 points—with strong academics, earning two Academic All-Big Ten honors at Wisconsin.[3] Beyond the box score, those who knew him described him as intense about improvement but also kind and low-key, a mix that suggests real locker-room value and work ethic.[5] He battled bone cancer for two years before his death in 2024, which means any evaluation should be viewed through the lens of a career and life cut far too short.[1][7]
