Rutgers’ walk-on-turned-defensive engine
Gary Brackett’s Rutgers profile is all about earned production and edge: as a walk-on middle linebacker, he became a two-time team MVP and captain, finishing his Rutgers career with 274 tackles and leading the Big East in tackles in 2002 with 126. His calling card was relentless intensity, downhill instincts, and special-teams value, plus the kind of underdog competitiveness coaches love in a defensive leader. If you want a tone-setting linebacker who raises the room’s standard, Brackett is the blueprint.
