Michael Maafu brings old-school edge and rugby-toughness to Idaho’s defensive front
Michael Maafu has been a depth and developmental piece on Idaho’s defensive line, with his background standing out: he arrived as a first-team all-conference, all-region lineman out of Saguaro High and an elite rugby athlete who represented Tonga internationally. That combo points to a player with toughness, contact balance, and a physical temperament that can translate well in the trenches. He’s the kind of prospect coaches like to mold into a reliable rotational DL if they want intensity, versatility, and a competitive nastiness that doesn’t show up on a box score.
