Abe Maurer brings a catcher’s grit and gap-to-gap upside to Gardner-Webb
In the 2026 season, Abe Maurer enters Gardner-Webb as a redshirt freshman catcher with a sturdy 5-foot-10, 210-pound build and a background that screams baseball IQ: a four-year varsity starter, two-time captain, and career .360 hitter who also threw out 50 runners in high school. That kind of defensive pedigree matters behind the plate, and his profile suggests a steady, physical receiver with leadership chops rather than flash. If you want a tough, team-first backstop who can handle the staff and add contact-driven offense, he’s worth a serious look.
