Mike Elbert brings ball-hawking upside and big-play juice to SIU’s secondary
Mike Elbert is a 6-foot, 195-pound sophomore safety for Southern Illinois who already has a reputation for finding the football, not just tackling it. In his most recent listed season, he played in all 12 games and had 12 tackles; in the earlier season on his roster bio, he finished with 39 tackles, 1 interception, 2 pass breakups, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 defensive touchdowns, including a 74-yard fumble return TD that ranks among the longest in school history. His fit is easy to understand: aggressive, turnover-oriented, and a legit change-the-game defensive back with proven playmaking instincts.
