early promise, limited Tennessee impact
J.J. Peterson arrived at Tennessee as a high-upside linebacker recruit, but his on-field Vols resume never really matched the hype: in the 2019 season, he appeared in 13 games and finished with 11 tackles, with most of his value coming on special teams and as a rotational reserve. His appeal was always physicality and recruiting pedigree, but he struggled to carve out a steady SEC role, and by 2021 he had entered the transfer portal. If you’re looking for instant production, he’s more “bet on traits” than proven starter.
