Marquette Guard Turned Elite Coach with Defensive Mastery at SIUE
Brian Barone, a former Marquette Golden Eagles guard, has evolved into a standout college head coach at SIUE Cougars, hitting his 100th career win in 2026 with a gritty 58-46 defensive clinic over Southern Indiana (4th-fewest OVC points allowed). His 2024-25 squad led the OVC in defense (66.5 PPG allowed, #35 NCAA; 40.2% FG defense, #20 nationally), posting a historic 22-win season, OVC Tournament title, and first-ever NCAA bid. Steady builder (8→22 wins in 6 years), Barone's intense, player-focused style and lockdown schemes make him a prime fit for programs seeking sustained defensive identity and tournament breakthroughs.
