Illinois State Redbirds Walk-On Guard from 2009-10 Era
Matt Coates, a 2011 Illinois State communication grad and former Redbirds men's basketball walk-on guard, appeared in seven games during the 2009-10 season without scoring, logging minimal minutes with one assist vs. Southeast Missouri State and a few rebounds—highlighting his gritty, team-first intensity as a bench contributor who developed leadership skills that propelled his post-playing career. No current college performance data available as of 2026; he's long graduated and serves on nonprofit boards, making him a nostalgic Redbird story rather than an active roster fit.
