James Mankaka is a young Western Illinois DB with early-playmaker traits and room to climb
In the 2025 season, James Mankaka logged 14 total tackles and 4 pass breakups for Western Illinois, showing active coverage skills and willingness to support the run from the back end.[1][2] At 5'9", 180 pounds, the redshirt freshman projects as a compact, competitive defensive back whose value is in quick reactions, toughness, and disruptive zone/slot play rather than pure size.[1][4][6] He is still early in his college career, so the appeal is developmental upside: a usable depth piece now with the type of intensity and coverage production that can earn a bigger role if his technique and consistency keep trending up.[1][2]
