Whitt Newbauer is OU’s big-bodied QB2 with real upside
In the 2026 season, Whitt Newbauer is positioned as Oklahoma’s backup quarterback behind John Mateer, and reports from summer camp say he’s leading the QB2 race while showing efficiency in the spring game. He brings a pro-style frame at 6-foot-6 and about 240 pounds, plus actual game reps: at Mercer in 2024, he threw for 1,398 yards and 12 touchdowns in nine games, then added brief reserve work for OU in 2025. The appeal is size, poise, and developmental upside; the question is whether he can turn that into steady SEC-ready production if called on.
