elite backup guard, defense-first engine
T.J. McConnell is a high-IQ, relentless backup guard whose value comes from defense, pace, and steady playmaking rather than volume scoring; in the 2023-24 season with Indiana, he averaged 8.7 points, 5.3 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.1 steals while shooting 54.3% from the field and 44.1% from three, and he has built a reputation for disruptive on-ball pressure and contagious energy. He fits teams that need a low-mistake organizer who can change tempo, defend aggressively, and stabilize second-unit minutes.[4]
