veteran Sam Houston run-stopper with old-school bulk
Troy Phipps is listed by Sam Houston as a redshirt senior defensive lineman at 5-11, 270, giving the Bearkats a compact, powerful interior presence in the 2026 season.[1] He fits the classic “plug the gap and make life miserable inside” profile: lower-body leverage, mass, and short-area toughness matter more than flash, and that makes him valuable in run defense and short-yardage situations.[1] The Bearkats opened the 2026 season with a 24-21 loss at Troy, so Phipps is part of a front that will need to get sturdier quickly if Sam Houston wants to climb back into the win column.[1][2][3]
