versatile Cal Poly depth piece with real catcher utility
In the 2026 season, Vinnie Van der Wel has been a versatile INF/C option for Cal Poly, with appearances at catcher and limited offensive production, but his value goes beyond the box score. Cal Poly’s roster notes and game coverage show a player trusted in multiple spots, including a season debut at catcher in postseason play, which suggests defensive flexibility and coach confidence. He also brings a left-handed bat and a strong, 6-foot-1, 205-pound frame, making him a useful fit for teams that prize adaptability, depth, and multi-position toughness over flashy numbers.
