Iowa State’s versatile, high-IQ safety with all-conference pedigree
In the 2000 season, Dustin Avey was a senior defensive back at Iowa State who had already earned multiple All-Big 12 nods and was praised as a four-year starter with 247 career tackles and six interceptions, plus strong academic and leadership credentials. He stood out for range, consistency, and football IQ—more “trusted anchor” than headline hunter—and even brought rare multi-sport athleticism from track. If you value experienced, dependable secondary play with production and maturity, he looks like a very good fit.
