Two-sport upside, but baseball sample is tiny for John Austin Wood
In the 2026 season, North Alabama catcher John Austin Wood appeared in one game and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, but he handled the defensive side cleanly with seven putouts on eight chances. He’s more than a box-score blip: the program notes he also plays football at UNA, and his high-school background included being ranked the No. 2 catcher in Mississippi by Perfect Game. The appeal is obvious—athletic, competitive, and versatile—but the baseball resume is still very developmental, so he looks like a long-term upside play rather than an immediate stat-sheet star.
