NEC Assist Legend Now Coaching, Not Playing
Phil Gaetano is no longer an active player for the Sacred Heart Pioneers; he is a former point guard (2011–2015) who holds Sacred Heart’s career assist record (730 assists, 3rd in NEC history) and now serves as an assistant coach at Saint Louis University (hired April 2024). His differentiators include elite court vision (averaged 6.3 apg in 2014–15, ranked 10th nationally), relentless intensity (started all 31 games that season, averaging 33.8 mpg), and a leadership personality that translates seamlessly to coaching. While he has no current injury history as a player, his transition from player to coach means he’s not a fit for a team seeking active roster talent—but an exceptional fit for a program needing a strategic, data-driven assistant who understands NEC basketball deeply.
