Mark Zapata brings live lefty depth and summer-innings momentum to UTRGV
In the 2026 season, Zapata is a redshirt junior left-handed pitcher for UTRGV with a 6'4", 190-pound frame and a clear fit for a staff that wants size, angle, and developmental upside.[1][3] He spent the summer with the Seguin River Monsters, where he logged 7.0 innings and struck out seven, a tidy sign of swing-and-miss ability and competitive reps after transferring from Alvin Community College.[2] The big takeaway: he looks like a useful bullpen or staff arm with a fresh-armed, projectable profile rather than a polished, stat-stuffed star—exactly the kind of pitcher coaches like to mold.[1][2][3]
