Northwestern dominated Western Illinois 42-7 in a season-opening rout at Martin Stadium, with quarterback Preston Stone leading the charge by tossing three touchdown passes. The Wildcats jumped out early with Cam Porter's 43-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and never looked back, building a commanding 22-0 halftime lead. Western Illinois avoided the shutout late when Cason Carswell connected with Christian Anaya on an 8-yard touchdown pass with just 2:47 remaining.
