Elijah Shumate was a tone-setting Notre Dame safety with NFL measurables and a big-play edge
In the 2015 season, Elijah Shumate gave Notre Dame a physical, box-oriented safety who played with real pop and good recognition, finishing with 70 tackles and an interception in the Irish’s official stats. He was rated as a top-10 safety recruit coming out of high school and brought NFL-style size and tackling toughness, but his game was also marked by inconsistency and a couple of benchings earlier in his career. The hook here is versatility: he could trigger downhill, diagnose quickly, and bring urgency to the secondary — the kind of player coaches trust when they want juice and edge, not just clean-up stats.
