promising Cal QB with proven high-school production, but still an untested college commodity
Esparza arrives at Cal as a redshirt freshman quarterback with a compact 6-foot, 190-pound frame and a solid recruiting profile as a three-star prospect; his high-school résumé shows real dual-threat juice, including 2,605 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, 6 interceptions, plus 386 rushing yards and 8 rushing scores in his junior season. He’s intriguing because of his playmaking feel and mobility, but there’s no meaningful college game log yet, so the biggest question is translation: can his high-school efficiency and off-script toughness scale against ACC defenses? If you want upside and patience, he’s a worthwhile developmental bet.
